Anticipatory Artificial Autopoiesis CYBERNETICS

چکیده
1 In examining relationships between autopoiesis and anticipation in artificial life (Alife) systems it is demonstrated that anticipation may increase efficiency and viability in artificial autopoietic living systems. This paper, firstly, gives a review of the Varela et al [1974] automata algorithm of an autopoietic living cell. Some problems in this algorithm must be corrected. Secondly, a new and original anticipatory artificial autopoiesis algorithm for automata is presented. In our automata system, the asymmetric membrane of the self-creating living cell plays a central role. The simulation confirms the validity of our algorithm in showing its autopoietic properties.

Life After Ashby: Ultrastability and the Autopoietic Foundations of Biological Autonomy
The concept of autopoiesis was conceived by Maturana and Varela as providing the necessary and sufficient conditions for distinguishing the living from the non-living (and, by extension, the cognitive from the non-cognitive). More recently however, there has been a growing consensus that their original conception of autopoiesis is necessary but insufficient for this task as it fails to meet a n...

This paper presents a biological view of knowledge and organizations formulated to provide a framework for understanding organizational knowledge and organizational knowledge management systems. This framework extends ideas based Karl Popper's (1972) epistemology of objective knowledge; Maturana and Varela's (1980, 1987) ideas of autopoiesis as extended to organizations by von Krogh and Roos (1...
متن کاملEnactive Cognitive Science and Biology of Cognition: A Response to Humberto Maturana
We very much appreciate that Maturana (2011) responded to our article, where we had made an attempt to excavate some of the hidden conceptual context in which the idea of autopoiesis had originally been formulated (Froese & Stewart, 2010). Our investigation was motivated by the growing interest in autopoiesis and related ideas among a new generations of researchers in cognitive science, driven ...
متن کاملCybersemiotic Medicine: A Framework for an Interdisciplinary Medicine
Today’s dominant paradigm of modern medicine, which is based on a biomechanical conception of the human, is not efficient and the need for an alternative multi and trans-disciplinary approach is sensed. For this purpose, although Cybernetics and systems theory can fruitfully explain how selforganization occurs, they do not have a theory of signification. Biosemiotics is a good candidate for the...
متن کاملAutopoiesis, Autonomy, and Organizational Biology: Critical Remarks on 'Life After Ashby'
In this paper we criticize the “Ashbyan interpretation” (Froese & Stewart, 2010) of autopoietic theory by showing that Ashby’s framework and the autopoietic one are based on distinct, often incompatible, assumptions and that they aim at addressing different issues. We also suggest that in order to better understand autopoiesis and its implications, a different and wider set of theoretical contr...
